Benefits and Results of Coaching

Some results are more "tangible" than others and are, therefore, easier to translate into monetary value or bottom-line impact. This is not to say that the tangible outweigh the intangible in terms of importance. In fact, intangible changes in the client's behavior can often have a wider-ranging impact than, or may actually lead to, the more tangible benefits of coaching.

jim coachingExamples of Tangible Benefits from Coaching:
  • Increased sales
  • Increased customer contacts
  • Increased number of new accounts
  • Decreased costs
  • Decreased employee turnover
  • Decreased absenteeism
  • Heighten employee engagement
  • Shorter time to market
  • Improved productivity
  • Fewer customer/employee complaints

Examples of Intangible Benefits from Coaching:
  • Reduced conflict
  • Better teamwork
  • More productive meetings
  • Improved employee morale
  • Improved development of subordinates
  • Better customer service
  • Increased job satisfaction
  • Better work/life balance

As an ICF Professional Coach, I acknowledge and agree to honor my ethical and legal obligations to my coaching clients and sponsors, colleagues, and to the public at large. I pledge to comply with the ICF Code of Ethics, and to practice these standards with those whom I coach.

Return On Investment

Clearly Identifying the Coaching Objectives Upfront
We can increase the chances of calculating a meaningful estimate of the bottom line impact of coaching if we carefully identify the highest priority objectives before the outset of the program - and take an "objective" measurement of these areas of interest before and after the coaching occurs.

Sharing information with the prospective client company on the return on investment of coaching can also be helpful in explaining coaching and securing coaching contracts.

An article offered at StartUpHappiness.com on the ROI of coaching offers these examples of ROI research:

  • Companies that have used professional coaching for business reasons have seen a median return on their investment of 7 times their initial investment, according to a study commissioned by ICF, and conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Association Resource Centre Inc. (ICF Global Coaching Client Study, 2009)
  • A study commissioned by a professional services firm, and performed by MatrixGlobal showed that the ROI on coaching was 6.8x the initial investment. (The Business Impact of Leadership Coaching at a Professional Services Firm, Merrill C. Anderson, PhD, 2006)
  • Three stock portfolios comprised only of companies that spend aggressively on employee development each outperformed the S&P 500 by 17 – 35% during 2003. (How's Your Return on People? Harvard Business Review, Laurie Bassi and Daniel McMurrer, 2004)
  • Employees at Nortel Networks estimate that their coaching programs earned the company a 5.2x return on investment and significant intangible benefits to the business, according to calculations prepared by Merrill C. Anderson, a professor of clinical education at Drake University. Including the financial benefits from employee retention boosted the returns to 7.8x the initial investment. (Coaching the Coaches, Psychology Today, 2004, and Case Study on the Return on Investment of Executive Coaching, Merrill C. Anderson, PhD, 2001)
  • According to a study of senior level executives at Fortune 1000 companies who received developmental coaching, the average return from the programs was nearly 5.7 times the initial investment. (Maximizing the Impact of Executive Coaching. The Manchester Review, Volume 6, Number 1, Joy McGovern, et al., 2001). Source: http://startuphappiness.com/coaching---roi/

After identifying the highest priority objectives for the coaching program, we can then consider the results that arise from either achieving or falling short of our objectives.

Definitions of Coaching

  • Coaching: Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
  • A Professional Coaching Relationship: A professional coaching relationship exists when coaching includes a business agreement or contract that defines the responsibilities of each party.
  • An ICF Professional Coach: An ICF Professional Coach also agrees to practice the ICF Professional Core Competencies and pledges accountability to the ICF Code of Ethics.

In order to clarify roles in the coaching relationship, it is often necessary to distinguish between the client and the sponsor. In most cases, the client and sponsor are the same person and therefore jointly referred to as the client. For purposes of identification, however, the International Coach Federation defines these roles as follows:

  • Client: The "client" is the person(s) being coached.
  • Sponsor: The "sponsor" is the entity (including its representatives) paying for and/or arranging for coaching services to be provided.
